5.5 - MILLENNIAL GROCERY STORE

Design a grocery store for the Millennial college student. This meant looking at how a student spends his or her time and what would be an interesting twist to cater the store to the target audience. 5.5 focuses on giving the shoppers a social experience and sells only party-related products for the college lifestyle.

THE PROJECT
Design a grocery store for the Millennial college student. This meant looking at how a student spends his or her time and what would be an interesting twist to cater the store to the target audience. 5.5 focuses on giving the shoppers a social experience with a focus on party-related products for the college lifestyle.
THE PROBLEM
Problems with today’s grocery stores:
• Have few open lines
• They are not convenient
• Shopping is boring, feels like chore
• Have small beverage sections

STUDENT LIFE
• Students don’t have well constructed schedules
• Late nights at school - especially during mid-term and finals week
• Unusual eating schedules
• Lack of healthy foods in dining halls
• Dining halls are not always open
• Students have very social and active lives. Take-out restaurants and grocery stores do not cater to this
• Spend a lot of time at social events and parties

BRANDING
The average amount of alcohol in a typical beer is usually around 4-7%. The logo and the store name represent the average of those two numbers, 5.5%. The makes for a fun and humorous store name, yet hints at what 5.5 is all about.
CAFE
The cafe is a fresh and modern area for students to relax and hang out in during the day, and party in during the evening. It features a bar for drinking with friends as well as many food options, where the food is cooked fresh in front of you.
OVEN BOOTH
This oven booth serving station is a modern take on an old-fashion brick oven. Students can approach the station to request their meals and watch as the cook makes their food in front of them.
PARTY AISLE
The party aisle is a convenience center for students who are on their way to parties. This aisle features mainly alcohol of many different sorts, as well as many other necessary products for parties, such as munchie food, eating untensils, and cleaning supplies for the party host. There are also beer draft machines that can hold and dispence the stores signature draft.
CHECK OUT
The check out will use a Radio Frequency Identification tag (RFID), which through a scanner can weigh and calculate the total amount of product in the cart. With the RFID, check out time now takes one minute instead of twenty, which is great for an on-the-go student.
MOBILE APP
The 5.5 application was designed to help the user while both inside of the store and outside. The app’s functions include:
Previous Items: Items that you have bought in the store previously, creating a shopping list.
New and Popular: Shows the newest and most popular items the store has to offer.
Party Registry: Lists which items a party still needs, or has been purchased.
Drink Mixer: Teaches you how to mix alcoholic drinks.
Party Locator: Shows you a map of parties in the area.
